Combian Military Frees Hostages

A daring rescue by the Colombian Military has freed 14 hostages including that of Ingrid Betancourt and three American contractors held since 2003.  A shift has taken place in recent months in the long-standing battle between the leftist rebels in Colombia known as FARC and the Government. Several of FARC's leaders have died and desertion is on the increase.  This victory will underscore the popularity of current Colombian President Uribe who is seeking a third term despite the constitutional prohibition of such an act.  For more news analysis on Colombia subscribe to DGMI alert.

Earthquake in China: Implications

The earthquake in China is expected to bring a substantial casualty figure and could eventually match that of the cyclone in Myanmar. In light of the forthcoming Olympics being held in Beijing this summer, the Chinese government is very keen to appear competent and transparent in their response to this crisis. Historically, the Chinese leadership has taken measures to hide the scale of their disasters from worldview. In economic terms, the Sichuan province contributes about 4% of China’s GDP and any economic impact it will have will be derived from perceptions about how the Government responds to this type of crisis by the international investment community.
